Progress & Setbacks: Our First Year is Done!

We’ve been open for a whole year! 🎉

lowcarbfoodco.kinsta.cloud has now been live and taking orders for over twelve whole months! And what a rollercoaster it’s been…

It’s a very small team of highly-motivated people that are behind this project, and we’ve been working hard over the last few years to bring our vision of genuine low-carb products to the market to help people with the practicalities of adopting and maintaining a challenging, life-changing regime in the face of an epidemic of diabetes and obesity.

The response has been fantastic. In the year since we launched the shop, we’ve sent out over 20,000 orders across the country 🎉

It’s been a great start, but we’ve got a lot of work to do. We thought we’d round up the year by giving you some insight into the great progress of Low Carb Food Co, as well as the ugly setbacks, and what we’ve got planned for 2022. Let’s get into it!

The progress…

New Products

Our range of low-carb bread is now second to none, including sliced loaves, seeded loaves, bread rolls, bloomers, cobs, baguettes and delicious focaccia bread. We also launched our ready-made pizzas and a range of pies, which were hugely popular!

Our range of ready meals continues to grow (18 delicious meals!) and a welcome development is that the whole range will be compatible with clean keto in the near future. Seed oils, begone! 👌There will soon be a new range of keto curry ready meals and sauces to accompany a range of low-carb Asian flatbreads.

We’re certainly not stopping there; you’ll be glad to hear that there’s much more to come in the New Year.

Recipes & Ingredients

As well as our own range of foods, we introduced a number of ingredients for low-carb cooking at home and added 35 recipes to what will grow to become a go-to library of low-carb cooking inspiration.

The Warehouse

We set up our distribution warehouse from scratch last year (great job, Paul and co!) and with our small team of four pumping out over 20,000 of your orders by hand, we’ve already had to move to bigger premises to keep up with demand 😅 We’ve settled in Flint in north Wales for the time being, but can we get comfortable? Only time will tell.

Our first ever pallet of deliveries 👋

Our first ever pallet of deliveries 👋

…and the setbacks.

Not everything, though, has gone according to plan.

We’ve experienced significant supply problems, with our manufacturing partners having been severely challenged again and again with labour shortages and supply line disruption caused by the perfect storm of COVID-19 and Brexit. We’ve also been genuinely caught out with the popularity of some of our new lines—1000 pork pies sold in three weeks!

Along with key staff absences through illness in the busiest periods (nevermind COVID, that “super cold” was brutal), all this has meant that some deliveries have been delayed, and Sam, our customer services manager, has been wiping sweat off her brow trying to respond to all of your customer queries in time.

Our carriers have been experiencing seasonal and logistical pressures that have also impacted delivery times, as well as the complexity of delivering a mixture of ambient, chilled and frozen orders. The “where’s my order” emails have been a struggle when we’ve been let down by a carrier; we have no control once your orders go on the carrier’s van and we get just as frustrated when our lovely loaves turn up mouldy 😢Refunds and redeliveries aplenty!

We’re continuously monitoring the performance of our carriers, and we’re happy to say that we’ve struck up a new relationship with DPD that will hopefully mean orders arriving when they’re supposed to—and with better notifications and hourly slots! 🙌

So, we start 2022 with a sincere apology to all our customers who had problems with our service in 2021. We’re still a relatively small team trying to do big things, and some of the challenges were—if you’ll forgive me for using an overused expression—unprecedented. But we are learning all the time and we will do better.

What’s next?

More Products

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt this year, it’s that you’re all hungry for more low-carb products! We’re doubling down on our product development process and we’ll be unlocking all sorts of wonderful, delicious food for your low-carb lifestyle. (Did someone say pasta? 🤫)

Better Education

We’ve been concentrating on product development and logistics over the last year, but we’re well aware that there’s a lot of work to be done when it comes to educating and supporting people about the low-carb way of life. We’ll be building out the educational section of our website with the latest scientific thinking and advice, as well as how-to guides, articles and all sorts of resources to support you all with your journey.

Clearer Nutrition

You need to be confident that each product is what we say it is. If we say it’s low-carb, then it is. If we say it’s keto, it won’t contain any starches or grains. If we say it’s clean keto, it won’t have any artificial sweeteners, either. We’re committing to full nutritional transparency, conveniently available for each item. No more pondering on the back of a packet! We’ll be improving the way this information is displayed on our site and living up to our mission: making it easier to adopt a low-carb lifestyle.

Thank you to all of you for being so patient and supportive. The response we’ve had in the last twelve months has been overwhelming, and it’s kept us going through some difficult times. We’re asking established food manufacturers to do things that have never been asked of them before and to use ingredients and methods that are completely new to them; a number have responded positively with ambitious product development pipelines for us, and we can’t wait to bring many of these products to you in 2022.

We look forward to continuing to make low-carb lifestyles easier to follow next year and to welcoming many more people onto that journey! On behalf of the Low Carb Food Co team, I wish you all a successful, prosperous and low-carb 2022.

Eryl
CEO, Low Carb Food Co
